Hitting the shops

Ok, so I've released the first book. What I need now is for people to read it. I need to get a following, get it into the hands of people who will come back for the second, third and fourth installments. But, how?
Social media was my first push, but making my post viral is nigh on impossible. My second tactic is the independents. Can I get local bookshops to stock a few copies? I'm thinking starting small, if I can get a few sales in one store then maybe there might be a snowball effect.
I have researched about a dozen local independent bookstores. I have rejected all those that explicitly say no to self-published authors on their website. Everyone else is fair game. Emails have been sent to all. Question is will any now take a punt on a local author? Watch this space.
